What is to be pointed out here is that the number of young high-tech start-ups is increasing as well. Might it be that like everywhere in Europe there is a lack of job opportunities or probably it is just that young people want to do things their way and on their own. Anyhow, Slovenia can boast of with quite some companies that have the potential to become like those listed above.
Some of the most prominent have been stimulated by the Ljubljana University Incubator (LUI). Among its members there is a long list of the most successful start-ups in the region starting with Zemanta (platform for bloggers) that has reached millions in foreign investments, or Uniki (development of intelligent media) that has moved part of its premises to London and is rapidly entering the international market.
Most of LUI members are reaching for the stars on the international level. Some of them have already achieved it. Mountvacation (online booking system for winter vacations) has gained foreign investments and is targeting the Hungarian market, while Sosed (pc home-assistance) is already well positioned in Germany. Worth mentioning here are also DiaGenomi (personal genetic diagnostic tests in the field of cardio-vascular diseases and genetic tests for breast and colorectal cancer, based on DNA expression profile) who has become Slovenian Start-up in 2011 and is trying to make its way to Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Czech, Italian, German markets. CalypsoCristal (crystal docks for iPhones) is one of the more inventive enterprises concerning market positioning. After a successfully accomplished crowd funding, they are now approaching the US, Russian and Southeast markets.
This is just a glance at some of the start-ups. For a more detailed review check the list of LUI members.
All the mentioned and more Slovenian companies work like positive vibrations for the Slovenian economy. They give a good example, motivation and work like role models for the young generation. That is the reason why I am firmly convinced that among the Slovenian students and researchers the next big thing is still to be discovered!!!
