MESI Ltd, founded in 2010, is a regular member of the Ljubljana University Incubator and one of the recipients of the Rector’s Award for Best Innovation of the University of Ljubljana. The company’s first project aimed at securing its place in the market, is the medical device for measuring the Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI MD), which is intended for the early diagnostic of Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), with the use of the oscillometric method.
PVD affects about 15% of the population over 65 years of age. Because of factors such as smoking, fatty diets and stressful lifestyles, experts estimate that 900,000 people in Slovenia may be affected by this disease. Following the recommendations of the International Society for Vascular Disease, every individual over 45 years of age should have his or her Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index measured, which means that the ABPI MD should be present in every clinic. There are 89,000 clinics in the European and Russian markets alone.
The main advantages of the Automatic Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index Measuring Device are a shorter measuring time, which is reduced from 30 minutes to 1 minute, greater ease of use, since it only requires the user to place three cuffs on the patient’s arm and on both ankles and press start, as well as cheaper diagnosis, since the measurement can be taken by a medical technician, instead of a doctor. The ABPI MD was developed in compliance with medical standards, legislation and user requirements.
The entire development process of the first series production will be concluded in December 2011. Other activities, including clinical trials, testing according to standards, active promotion and further development of the device will be conducted simultaneously.
The company’s name MESI stands for Medical Electronics Slovenia.
